What a sweet, sweet baby girl I was lucky enough to have the chance to photograph! Alexis was born a bit early and was 3 weeks old in her portraits, but you wouldn’t have know since she slept and curled up like a 3 day old! I had so much fun trying out a few new things with her, including my little handmade crown, perfect for this tiny princess. The gorgeous purple knit bow is from Knits for Cuties, these are such a sweet accessory for any little girl.

She is so completely and utterly beautiful, what a joy it was to photograph her. I just love her dark hair, squishy cheeks, and precious little lips. Talk about baby fever! Lily was 10 days old for her session, this is the perfect age to get those sweet curled up poses like those seen here. If you are preggers and planning on scheduling newborn portraits, please make sure you contact me before baby is born. We can set up a tentative date based on your due date and that way there is sure to be room in my schedule for you when baby arrives.

This week’s theme is Define. I got to thinking, what is it that defines me, what makes me who I am? I am a mother and a daughter; a fiance and a friend; I am an artist, photographer, scrapbooker, crafter, and dabbler in sewing; I am a lover of animals and the outdoors, especially the beach; I am a gardener and a cook; I am a shopper, a collector, a lover of anything vintage; I am a business woman. I am so many things, and I wondered….what would that look like if I could put it all in a bottle? So I did! There is something magical that happens when you think about all the things you are, all the hats you wear; you realize that you are enough just as you are. I am enough for my daughter, my family. I am enough for me, enough for the world. I like the definition of me.

And now, for a little more on the theme define, go visit Amelia Chiew of Canada, for her take on this week’s word. Don’t forget you can follow the links at the end of each post to see what all the lovely photographer’s from around the world are doing for this project. Enjoy and Happy Monday!

Well hello spring! Oh the sunshine, at long last, has had me itching to get my hands dirty in my garden. I found this super fun garden craft type project that Avery and I did. There is a tutorial here. (Side note: I LOVE Mother Earth News!) Start collecting your TP tubes people! Even better than recycling them, you can use them to craft up some home made seed starters. I did mine a bit differently than the tutorial because I forgot to cut them in half first, but either way it works the same. I put the tube “pots” on a cardboard tray I saved from some veggies I got at the store, or you could use any thick box or plastic trey (since it will get wet keep that in mind). We decided to plant sugar snap peas in our pots, my favorite are these from Territorial Seed, perfect for our NW climate. I was actually really surprised how quick they came up, we saw sprouts in just 5 days! We have had these on the window sill in the bathroom, it is plenty warm and there is lots of light. Right now these starts are 18 days old, and they are ready to plant. We are making a bean tee-pee in the backyard like this one, so we will plant these there and cross our fingers the chickens stay away (because they love tender young starts for lunch!) I hope you have a chance to make these quick and easy seed starts with your kiddos, they will love watching their seeds grow.

This week’s theme is Reflect. Wow, this one really got me thinking as you could take it in a lot of directions. But most of all what it made me think about was reflecting on my personal journey in photography. I can’t believe I have been doing this for a living for over 4 years…and then I remembered my very first paying client. This was back in 2004, when I was still in school at the University of Washington, in the fine art photography program. I photographed this family session with my Hasselblad, medium format camera, using my favorite Ilford 100 speed 120mm film…even processed the film and prints myself in the darkroom. Back then digital was still the new kid on the block, and I had dreams of a business photographing families all on b&w film. Boy, so much has changed! However my vision, what makes me me, still remains. I love everything about this picture. It is unconventional for a family portrait yes, but it perfectly captures the essence of this family, the curiosity of a one year old, and the unmistakable beauty that is film. I wish you could hold and feel this in your hand, it is printed on the most wonderful fiber based paper and has such a lovely tone, which really doesn’t translate into this scanned and uploaded version. Reflecting on this time in my life, where I started and where I am today, has really been a gift and a wonderful reminder.

“A little reflection will show us that every belief, even the simplest and most fundamental, goes beyond experience when regarded as a guide to our actions.” -William Kingdon Clifford

And now, for a little more on the subject of reflection go visit Amelia Chiew of Edmonton Canada, for her take on this week’s theme. Don’t forget you can follow the links at the end of each post to see what all the lovely photographer’s from around the world are doing for this project. Enjoy and Happy Monday!
